The Gambia - Central Bank of The Gambia

BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The Gambia achieved internal self -government in October 1963. On 01 October 1964, the new currency ordinance which established the Gambia Currency Board came into force. The Gambia Currency Board started issuing notes and coins to replace the notes and coins issued by the West African Currency Board for The Gambia, the Gold Coast, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. On 18th February 1965, The Gambia gained its independence form Great Britain. After independence, efforts to assert the soverignty and nationhood of the new country by establishing a Central Bank that would issue its own currency got underway. These efforts intensified with the attainment of republican status in 1970. The Central Bank of The Gambia was therefore established in 1971 taking over the assets and liabilities of the Gambia Currency Board.
